For the past few weeks, our server has been hit by AI scraper bots coming from thousands IP addresses of different ranges. This has caused very heavy traffic and, at times, made the server unresponsive.
To reduce this load, we apply limits only when the server's instant load average goes above 1.5. When that happens, requests to pmwiki.php from the same IP address must be at least 0.7 seconds apart, and no more than 10 requests are allowed within a 20 second period. Petko
