B) The True Story of My VERY FIRST pmWiki UP-GRADe Is \/Below\/. More Than You Ever Wanted To Know About the "Hang-Ups" I Encountered and Their Resolution.

Dear pmWiki users

Concerning PmWiki Up-Grades, I am a Newbee (Newbie!!). I place My First pmWiki Up-Grade Story here since it may be of help to other Newbees here is the story and some of the problems and uncertainties I ran into.

My pmWiki site is at http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/ . (See /\top/\ of this page you are reading now, for A Brief Introduction to My pmWiki WebSite.)

Back in ~2003, My WebSite had been running on my University's Windows Server, which was had been recently updated to new Windows software Versions. At this time we were running under php: Hypertext Preprocessor v5.0.2 downloaded from official php site= http://www.php.net/. (We later successfully upgraded to v5.1.2.)

Back at this time, my WebSite had been running successfully for abut a year, on pmWiki v 2.0 Beta 17, when I decided to upgrade to pmWiki v 2.1.5. This was because I wanted the pmWiki "Total Counter", to count visits to all my pages separately".

"Total Counter" is one of the pmWiki Cookbook Recipes, and my current v 2.0 Beta 17 did not do this. This was in agreement with one of the comments on http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/Cookbook/TotalCounter . This comment stated that "Without the up-grade to pmWiki v 2.1.5, Total Counter would accumulate all the pages visited into the home page count.")

Well, ..... I carefully followed all the Upgrade instructions on http://www.pmwiki.org/wiki/PmWiki/Upgrades as follows:

I downloaded the zip version and used WinZip on my computer to open the file onto my computers HD. then I successively copy and pasted each of these Wiki Files into the pmWiki folder on the University Server. (This required I use "mapped Drives" created for this purpose.) Of course this procedure would "overwrite" certain of the old files, so I was sure to have previously made BAK files. I double checked that I had moved each of the files listed on the abovementioned Upgrade page and checked that the Byte size of each replaced file was about right.
After the new upgrade files were in placed and checked, I found that my site showed only a BLANK BROWSER PAGE, with NO ERROR messages!!! I understood this is a very, very rare occurrence with pmWik, so I was really in trouble!!
To solve this problem, I tried rereading all of the Upgrade Instructions and reading all the pmWiki trouble-shooting pages, the Pm Wiki: Release Notes and many, many of the pmWiki Users Archives. To cover all the bases, I even closely studied carefully the New Install Instruction page. In fact this last pages contained the needed clue, "Don't put file pmWiki. php into server index folder", but I did not realize that was my problem until I searched and groped and struggled for several days!!! I'm really stuck, so I finally joined the pmWiki Users group to ask for help. I was nearly finished typing up a complete explanation of my problem symptoms and site setup, when the needed info dawned: I was in process of typing the sentence that said "I have not altered the files original files = pmwiki.d, cookbook, local, scripts, and index ......". I decided that I better double-check each of these, when I suddenly realized, AHA, I'm not supposed to have an index!! This reminded me of the above mentioned admonition "Don't put file pmwiki.php into server index folder"!! Ohhhhh ... Ok!! There's the problem! I opened this file (in the html editor called "HTML-kit") both the original index file and the new pmwiki downloaded file. This allowed me to copy and pasted the new pmwiki contents into index file. (I know this is still wrong and will cause trouble upon the next upgrade, but now that the problem is solved, I can do the next step called the "Wrapper", as a second step. Right then I couldn't figure out how to do this, and I knew this would take some time to get it right.)
My browser NOW showed a BLANK PAGE, with ERROR messages: "PmWiki can't process your request. Unable to find skin from list bare." There were three other warnings were also there, but these were of lesser concern to me.
Progress!! But still not there!! I switched my help letter to include this new clue and sent it off to the pmWiki-UserGroup and rested for the day. A weekend and two days later Clayton Curtis, was kind enough to send the following suggestion: "Were you perhaps using other than the default skin prior to the upgrade and replace the skins directory with that of the 2.1.5 distribution, thus losing the skin?" This gave me the much needed courage to go looking for the our old, apparently specialized skin called "bare", and copy & paste this file properly into the pub/skins/ folder where it evidently belonged with all the other skins.

Dear Mr. Curtis

Thanks very, very much for your help my pmWiki blank page & "Unable To Find Skin Problem"!!! Your guidance gave me the nudge to know where to look for the problem. I went directly to the missing file in my BAK folder, and transferred it to the proper place in pub/skin, and all is working GREAT now!! Thanks so much!!

I notice you also provide quite a large amount of help to other [pmwiki-users]. My hats off to you for doing this!! I can't think of a better use for your skills!!

I am very impressed by all the extensive pmWiki installation, trouble-shooting, imbedded README's, etc pages to help users to get thru installation and upgrades!!!

Thanks to you all and especially Mr. Prichard and Clayton Curtis!! My $100.00 has been sent in as donation from a grateful user!!

Sincerely

Henry Gurr

C) The Following Describes a SPECIAL Way To Operate Your pmWiki WebSite ENTIRELY WITHIN Your Own Computer.

This would be a way to develop & test your WebSite, Without => The additional steps of Purchasing a Domaine Name, Or Setting Up An Account with An Internet Server Company.

EXPLANATION: My son, David Gurr helped me set up, on my home computer "a server" for local display of pmWiki , WHICH ALSO OPERATES WITH Gallery.Project.com PHOTO GALLERY =>

To Do This My Son Used the pmWiki Cookbook Standalone As Localhost.

THUS: We hereby ANNOUNCE the successful use of pmWiki StandAlone Software to run Gallery1 Photo Gallery WebPages & pmWiki WebPages .

This is in my local Computer, for purely local viewing, photo adding, editing changes, etc.
In other words all the things you normally can do when pmWiki and Gallery.Minalto are on a standard internet server.)

SPECIAL NOTE: Gallery.Minalto.com ALSO has a standalone for their Gallery, but we believe it is much more difficult to set up than the pmWiki Standalone. This might be quite attractive to Gallery users, irrespective of whether they want to use any pmWiki WebPages. More information at: http://gallery.menalto.com/node/69740

Well that’s my story: Today is Jan 5 2020, and it is now ~18 years later and my pmWiki WebSite continues to expand and be refined, all the while => Overall VERY successful and mostly free of problems or hang-ups !! Even the up-grades to latest versions of pmWiki, go well.

Send me an email if you need more information OR have questions. Sincerely Henry Gurr HenryG@USCA.edu

Appendix: Our Use Of pmWiki Cookbook >Total Counter For Visitor Statistics:

We have used Total Counter, from the very first of our pmWiki WebPages. Generally this has been very successful AND an important resource for visitor data, http://venturearete.org/ResearchProjects/ProfessorGurr/Main/HomePage?action=totalcounter

BUT about once a year the Counter will Reset To Zero, with no apparent cause. This may be a peculiarity of our Overall Computer Installation. If you have any ideas for a fix, please email.

Just in case you want to see the rate of our Total Counter Statistics, for the period June 28 2018 to Jan 15 2019, is BELOW, albeit in non-graphical just number format.

[NOTE: Sorry for all the Extra “NEW LINE”. Given the Total Counter C&P, these were necessary to get pmWiki to do the Carriage Returns in proper place. ]
