[pmwiki-users] error converting to 2.1

On converting from 0.4 to 2.1, I have encountered a big problem.

To view a 0.4 page through 2.1 I had to add a line to convert 
\\\\262 to \n -- otherwise I just saw one long stream of text.

But after running a conversion, I see no newlines, just pairs 
of superscript 2 characters.

Is there something obvious I have done wrong?
